New Ethikl website encourages consumers to buy ethical goods

[Mon 08/02/2010 10:56:10]

In a bid to promote ethically made, organic and fair trade products, entrepreneur Peita Gardiman has launched a website, Ethikl, catering to small artisan suppliers producing handmade, fair trade or organic goods.

“We live in a culture of excess, we want more and more and then throw it away faster and faster,” Gardiman says in an interview with the online site Inside Retailing.

“When you buy something from Ethikl, there’s a story behind it. There’s a person behind it. If people start to rediscover handmade, natural products, they will learn to treasure them and become more ethical consumers.”

In addition to injecting the habits of consumers with an awareness of the origins of a product and its life cycle, Gardiman aims to connect suppliers of organic, handmade or fair trade products directly with consumers.

Suppliers are able to build virtual stores at Ethikl to showcase their products to potential buyers and communicate their stories and philosophies.

“At Ethikl, shoppers have a similar experience to visiting a farmers market where there is the opportunity to discover amazing local goods from passionate producers,” Gardiman says.

Ethikl has followed the latest trend of using social networking websites such as Facebook or Twitter to create a following of online fans to increase their profile among ethically minded consumers.
