Diningware and homewares company Portmeirion celebrates 50th anniversary

Distributed in Australia by Whitehill & Co, British manufacturer of fine porcelain diningware and homewares, Portmeirion, marks its 50th anniversary in 2010.
Portmeirion was founded half a century ago by Susan Williams-Ellis, who soon grew to be renowned as one of Britain’s legendary designers.
In honour of founding designer Williams-Ellis the company has introduced the Portmeirion Originals collection, which is a tribute to her first designs and the innovative techniques she used in the 1960s and 1970s to reinterpret casual diningware.
In the past 50 years, Portmeirion has grown from strength to strength and expanded its existing collections as well as adding new product lines and acquiring other companies and brands.
With ranges covering everything from fine diningware to more casual settings, Portmeirion boasts some iconic brands such as Spode, which was founded in 1770; Royal Worcester, which was established in 1751; and the more recent acquisition, Pimpernel.
The company recently released the Sophie Conran for Portmeirion collection of porcelain tableware and homewares, a brand developed in conjunction with food writer Sophie Conran, the daughter of Caroline and Sir Terence Conran.
Available in Australia from Whitehill & Co, the Sophie Conran for Portmeirion ranges have been internationally acclaimed for the combination of their delicate appearance and practical design.
