Sleepy Wings creator finds business award success

[Tue 19/07/2011 03:31:17]

A mum who created a unique sleepwear item for babies has been selected as a finalist in the 2011 Bio-Oil AusMumpreneur Awards for product innovation.

Shae Tye has also been named one of five business women to score a $20,000 grant from a Huggies initiative to recognise inventive mums and their companies and/or products.

The Sleepy Wings help stop babies from heating while asleep but keep them wrapped so they’re unable to startle or scratch themselves. She created the product, which has special pockets, to solve the problem of continuously replacing her little one’s dummy.

The slumber wear jacket can be worn during day and night sleep and allows babies to sleep with their arms up in their natural and preferred position. It stays clear of the neck and chest to avoid choking.

Tye says she gets great enjoyment from running her own business.

"I love the fabulous testimonials that come through daily,” she says. “My favourite that I hear over and over is ‘this is the best product I have bought for my baby’. It gives me shivers of pride.”

The New South Wales mum also has advice for those wishing to start a similar venture.

“Set up a facebook page, test the market for support of your business idea. Starting small, and slowly build up your dream to bigger things. Seek grants available, some government grants are available for innovation. Utilise all your support systems – grandparents, sisters, aunties to help with your children or the house work, when you need time to focus on your business."

The 2011 Bio-Oil AusMumpreneur Awards are presented by connect2mums and award business, product, services and innovation achievement by mums in Australia and New Zealand. Winners will be selected by a public vote with awards to be announced August 27.
