Homewares store and café Burnt Orange will represent Australia’s independent retailers at the gia awards in Chicago next year after being crowned the Australian winner.
“We are absolutely thrilled to receive the gia award for the best independent store in Australia for 2012,” says owner Padraig Devlin.
“It is richly rewarding to be recognised in the industry and we look forward to representing Australia at the global awards in Chicago.”
Located in Mosman, Sydney, the Burnt Orange concept of mixing retail and café was established in 2009 to give people a fun and relaxed shopping and eating experience.
“The goal was to create an extension of one’s own home, where you could come for a browse in the shop before lunch on the terrace or sit down to afternoon tea when the birthday presents have been bought,” he says.
The building was an important factor as the old Mosman golf clubhouse from the 1930s was renovated together with Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.
The sandstone mansion overlooks Sydney Harbour and retail takes up two indoor levels of the building with the café on a wrap-around terrace with spectacular views. The café has an informal feel serving breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.
Devlin says winning the gia award Australia will give the store exposure that is beyond valuable.
“It gives us confidence that we’re on the right track with what we are doing here but also makes us hungry to learn and develop further.
“Meeting and seeing other store winners from around the globe will help us develop as a business, our brand awareness multiplies infinitely and the recognition from gia brings our store marketing strategy to a whole new level.”
