By Dezign crowned independent retailer of the year

The Sydney based business, which has stores in Auburn and Artarmon and began trading in 1996, beat out Victorian winner Eyeclarity and Queensland’s Glitter and Dance Fabric Specialists for the trophy.
Corporate affairs manager Courtney Adams says the win was unexpected but very welcome.
“To be named as the Eftpos Australian Independent Retailer of the Year was a thrilling surprise for us,” she says.
“Given the calibre of the competition, it is a sincere honour to receive this level of industry recognition, particularly bestowed on us by the Australian Retailers Association.
“The win has been a wonderful morale boost for our entire team and a cause for celebration. The award also acted as a base for evaluating the business and to reflect on what we have achieved to date.”
Adams believes it is By Dezign’s ability to compete with large chains by providing its customers with valuable product and service which helped it score the honour.
“To do this successfully, we have developed core competencies in product sourcing and store merchandising and have invested heavily in developing our team to achieve these objectives. There is also a genuine ambience that comes not only from the physical aspects of our store but also from the warmth and friendliness of our team.”
By Dezign plans to use the win to boost its profile both within the industry and among consumers. To remain a leading independent retailer, Adams says the team will continue to tailor marketing towards its target customer and ensure its website meets online trends. There is also talk of opening more stores in Sydney.
ARA executive director Russell Zimmerman says the decision to give the title to By Dezign was easy.
“By Dezign encompasses all the qualities of a successful independent retailer with its focus on excellent customer service, smooth operations and a clear vision to provide products for the best quality rooms at the most affordable price,” he says.
