Frida Plumm draws inspiration from the Aztecs for new range

[Tue 29/11/2011 11:45:00]

Designer giftware brand Frida Plumm has dipped into the history books to find inspiration for its latest range, Troika.

The Melbourne based fine bone china and stationery business looked to the Aztec Triple Alliance – which dates back to the 14th century – to come up with designs for plates, bowls, mugs and note cards.

Frida Plumm designs often draw from exotic influences and extraordinary relics, but founder and creative director Coutenay Graham says this collection differs in that it focuses more on geometry and bold patterns rather than delicate floral.

“I wanted to take a different approach with the new Troika collection treating the designs in a more geometric and striking graphic manner,” she says. “The inspiration began as theme that was researched, explored and expanded over time. Through the creative process this was refined and developed into a set of harmonious designs then translated onto china with a contemporary edge.

“I wanted this range to be a complete contrast by using a brighter colour palette and looking at symmetry and geometry in a bold manner. Also, this collection is less formal in its treatment and has a sense of fun in its application along with the bold graphic packaging.”

The dinnerware products appear to be most popular though other pieces in the range are proving to be customer favourites as well.

“The petite bowls have been a steady favourite and I think the platter with its scale and magnificence along with the stunning packaging is a great item for special occasions such as weddings. The stationery collection has been expanded in this collection, due to such an overwhelming response from [the previous collection] Illuminators Garden.

“These items are really unique in their presentation in the embossed tin cases and are something that would be kept long after the product has been used. They’re an easy versatile gift at a really accessible price point,” explains Graham.
