Survey shows books popular gift this Christmas

Consumers can expect to find a book among the presents under the Christmas tree this year according to an Australian Retailers Association (ARA) survey, which shows books are among the top five most popular gift ideas for mums, dads, kids, partners and friends.
Despite the result being good news for book stores, last year’s trend of electronic gifts and gift vouchers will continue this festive season.
“Books are unanimous across all categories which will hopefully be a great boost for book stores and shows books always appeal to a wide range of interests as well as being a great holiday leisure activity,” says executive director Russell Zimmerman.
“Credits also featured highly, with 73 per cent planning to give gift vouchers or money.
“Electronic gifts were also popular ideas depending on the recipient. Teenagers, for example, were set to enjoy their new ‘iThings’ on Christmas day with 25 per cent of respondents planning on buying iPods, iPhones, iPads and iTunes vouchers for adolescents.
“iPads and other electronics were high on the list for men this Christmas but dads tend to have the worst luck at this time of year with only two per cent of respondents saying they would spend the most amount on their dads for gifts like alcohol, chocolates, clothes and tools.”
Mums will likely get either perfume, jewellery or cosmetics while boys will be given lego or bikes and girls will receive toys, dolls and clothes.
But when it comes to expensive presents Zimmerman says the recipient is likely to get an experiential gift.
“For those splashing out and buying big ticket items over $2000, 41 per cent said a holiday was on the cards,” he adds.
