The move down under is part of the brand’s aim to increase its presence in international markets. Australia was partly chosen because of its robust economy.
“Australia has had booming success over the past decade and the economy is very strong,” explains Wotjek Kolan, business development director for Thumbs Up UK.
“There is currently a high level of consumer spending and so the chance to distribute our brand in this region presented itself at just the right moment. We are very pleased to have found the right partner to take the Thumbs Up brand down under.”
Trendtastic director Darren Campbell has been named business development director for Thumbs Up Australia and will oversee the brand from the company’s Perth base.
“Trendtastic is a distributer of unique gifts and innovative lifestyle products,” he says. “We currently have a wide retail customer base which includes chain stores, mail order companies and internet web stores, and Thumbs Up provides us with just the right genre and range of products sought after by our retailers.”
Campbell believes the brand will do well in the local market.
“Historically, we’ve observed that popular UK products also do very well in the Australasian markets as the mentality and consumer ethos are so similar.
“Considering Thumbs Up’s unique approach to the novelty gifts and gadgets industry and their continuing success in the UK and abroad, I’m confident that they will be equally profitable in Australia and am predicting big results from this affiliation,” he adds.
Thumbs Up’s global expansion strategy has led to offices in Germany, France and Dubai and a distribution centre in the US. Kolan predicts international business will make up 65 per cent of company turnover by 2013.
