Oxfam Christmas sales top previous year

Fundraising manager Leigh Stewart believes the acceptance of online shopping and interest in the charity has helped boost its figures amid the flat market.
“The brand recognition of Oxfam Unwrapped as a product is increasing every year and the retail sector more generally has seen an increase in people buying goods online which certainly helps us,” she says.
Oxfam Unwrapped allows consumers to purchase a gift card which donates much needed supplies or training for people in need. For as little as $10 customers can buy a chicken for a poverty stricken family in Laos.
“The Oxfam Unwrapped Goat is always the top seller and the goat has come to be the icon of the range.
“Goats are priced at $39 and for families in some developing countries are a great source of milk and manure, and can be sold for money or donated to other families so that they can breed them and also benefit,” Stewart explains.
While Stewart is unsure why Oxfam’s sales continue to grow when consumers are counting their pennies, she says people tend to be more giving during hard times.
“There could many explanations. In a time like this, people may be more selective about where their money is going. A charitable gift is one way to know that your dollar is going a long way and if you are going to spend it’s a very worthy way to do so.
“In our experience, people are still very generous when times are tough,” she says.
