With the Year of the Dragon upon us, retailers have been busy stocking their shelves with related product for Chinese New Year.
Business to business e-commerce site Alibaba.com recorded the third highest number of searches for dragon themed goods globally in the lead up to the event.
“Australian retailers have been taking advantage of demand for Year of the Dragon memorabilia with items in the shape of or featuring dragons among the most searched for products on the site,” says Daphne Lee, Alibaba.com director of international business development and marketing Asia Pacific.
“This includes statues, pens, tea sets, t-shirts, lamps, USB flash drives, toys, cake moulds, temporary tattoos, water fountains, faucets and piggy banks.”
Searches for dragon products spiked 165 per cent between June and December with enquiries from local businesses interested in importing and selling dragon related goods at its highest in October. This figure remained strong in November and December.
Top searches were for rings and pendants featuring the mythical creature, adult dragon costumes, jade dragons and dragon sculptures.
Tea sets and iPhone cases with dragon motifs, dragon garden statues and inflatable dragons were next in demand.
“The Year of the Dragon is the most auspicious year in the Chinese lunar cycle,” Lee says.
“Many people believe placing decorative dragon items at home or wearing or using items with dragons on them will invite luck and prosperity in to their lives.”
Alibaba.com was founded in China 12 years ago to help connect small business with consumers and suppliers around the world. More than 695,000 Australians use the site.
